this is what im talking about like the word is already out there what exactly is the point of doing this someone elighten me

Because some people don’t know. Since I put the icon on, I’ve gotten over ten messages asking me about what’s going on in Libya. I’ve seen posts on my dashboard thanking others for spreading the word because they were not aware of it. The fact that you are aware of it and choose not to spread it does not mean everybody on the internet is blessed with the same knowledge.

Because it breeds unity. On tumblr, we bicker to no end about the most trivial of matters to the point that we want to pull our hair out. The fact that we can put our differences and, to some extent, our identity aside and focus on something that is thousands of miles from us is beautiful.

Because it breeds support. I know of at least three people on my dashboard who are of Lybian descent, and of a couple others with family in Libya. But most of all, I know humans. We’re all fucking human and we need to show that, amidst racism and homophobia and everything in between, there is good in the world and we can act upon it in the darkest of times.

Because, damn it, we can. Tumblr is a force and there is no denying it. We can accomplish a lot, and we have. We have saved lives, spread awareness on a myriad of matters, and united for situations less pressing than this one. Those are rarities, though. More usually than not, we focus our strength, the undeniable brunt of it, on things like Omegle invasions and Facebook spams and things of equal triviality. Now, we’re all doing something— despite creed or fandom or belief or any other factor— and we are getting things done.

And it sickens me that you could look upon this with the slightest trace of negativity.
